Disciple Women’s February Project – KSDS – Kansas Specialty Dog Service
We turn to KSDS, Kansas Specialty Dog Service, based in Washington, Kansas as our February project.
When KSDS puppies are eight weeks old, volunteer puppy-raisers take them home into their communities for 16-24 months to teach them basic obedience, home and public manners and 30-40 commands. Dogs are trained not to interact with the general public; they focus solely on their partner.
Guide dogs assist wheelchair-bound people who are sightless, have had a stroke, accident victims and other people with carrying and picking things up, pulling wheelchairs, opening and closing doors, and getting around communities.
More than 500 canine assistance teams have graduated since 1999, KSDS beginnings. The approximate cost per dog is $25,000. These dogs increase confidence and the ability of their partners to remain independent, involved in work places and socially in the community, enriching the lives of people in need. Assistance dogs are raised in love and return love unconditionally, at no cost to their partner.
Sounds like a winner to us! How about you? Please mark your envelope “DW project.” Thanks! Read the bulletine here.
