June 2017 Newsletter - Rev. Laurie Lewis to be new Senior Pastor -
After a process that took over a year, the Pastoral Search Committee selected Rev. Laurie Lewis to recommend to the congregation to be called as Senior Pastor of First Christian Church. A reception was held on Friday, May 12, for members, staff, and community to meet Laurie. A congregational meeting was held Sunday, May 14, for the congregation to vote on calling Laurie. There were 55 ballots marked and returned with the congregation voting overwhelmingly to call Laurie with 54 voting "yes" and one voting "no".
Laurie is a graduate of Texas Christian University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in radio, television, and film. She says that although always knowing she was called to ministry, she tried to deny the call when choosing a lifelong vocation, however eventually discovered that God never gives up. She entered Brite Divinity School where she received her Master of Divinity and entered full-time ministry. She says, "I have since accepted my call with great joy. I absolutely love what I do and I think that is reflected in the energy I bring to worship and congregational life."
Laurie has served as interim minister of South Broadway Christian Church in Denver, CO since January 2016. Prior to that call she served as Senior Pastor of Monte Vista Christian Church, Albuquerque, NM for almost 11 years.
Laurie's first Sunday with us will be July 16. Read More.
A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Nearly 2,000 years ago a birth occurred, a very unique birth with worldwide and everlasting ramifications. This birth came seven Sundays following Easter Sunday. It was the Day of Pentecost and as the believers of Jesus Christ were gathered, something amazing happened. God poured out His Holy Spirit. We mark this day as the birth of the church universal. We invite you to join us on Sunday, June 4th as we celebrate this special day.
Through the centuries, the church became known as the Body of Christ. In our community of Parsons, the early Christian settlers gathered informally in homes to study the Bible and enjoy fellowship. The birth of our congregation came 145 years ago when the formal organization of “Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Sunday School” was established. This first Sunday School met in a real estate office and later a lodge and a one-room frame structure. Baptisms took place in Labette Creek and an old mill pond located on 21st between Main and Washington Streets. The exact birth date was August 4, 1872.
A charter was granted in 1878 and 35 members participated in both worship services and a Bible School.
